There's a new restaurant in town and it will satisfy your cravings for authentic Thai cuisine! From prawn cakes, pomelo salad and spring rolls to tom yum, pad thai and sukhothai noodle soup, it'll be one delicious Thai food trip!
The words "Eat Thai, Love Thai" greet diners at SOI together with its casual dining ambiance. Opened last Friday at the Lower Ground Floor of SM City Iloilo, the restaurant's 7th branch serves a wide variety of Thai specialties - noodles, rice dishes, salads, soups, curry dishes, grill meats/seafood and desserts.
With most of the ingredients freshly imported from Thailand and carefully selected for quality and flavor, SOI aims to bring the same Thai experience on the dishes they serve. It also take pride in giving guests total satisfaction and great variety of Thai food (over 70 Thai specialties ) using only the freshest and finest ingredients.
So how would one "eat Thai and love Thai"? Let's count the ways as we enjoy each bite, spoonful and sip of these SOI specialties...
POMELO SALAD with SHRIMPS (PhP288). Whenever, wherever this salad is on the menu, I'd go for it and SOI didn't disappoint. The sweetness of the pomelo complemented the flavor of the other ingredients (I assume shallots, dried fish/baby shrimps,etc), that it makes a perfect appetizer as well as palate cleanser - depending on the order of your eating.
MINCED ROAST DUCK SALAD (PhP288). First impression was that it was sisig because of the roast and citrus combination plus the burst of appetizing flavors. A highly recommended salad that would really make you asking for more.
PRAWN CAKES (PhP 260). Fried yet with hints of "crispy fluffiness", it goes well with the sweet spicy dip it comes with. A good appetizer but can be eaten with rice too!
FRESH SPRING ROLLS (PhP148). Like its Vietnamese counterpart, this one has rice noodles, carrots, cucumber, cilantro and more rolled in to thin fresh rice wrapper. Comes in 8s with two dips - sweet-savory and peanut sauce.
SUKHOTHAI (PhP298). "Sweet, sour and spicy" as it was describes to us and indeed it was. It consists rice noodles, meat, tofu and some fishballs? and garnished with spring onions, garlic and cilantro The moment the broth touches your lips, both the sweet and sour tastes rivals for your attention but after a while the spiciness kicks in - even it was just "mild" on the recipe.
PAD SEE EW (PhP208). I love noodles and seeing that this version had bigger "pancit" it was a go. Meaning "stir-fried soy sauce noodles", the noodles are stir fried in the sauce then mixed with the other ingredients. I don't know if that's the same cooking technique used but still a delicious noodles dish.
PAD THAI (PhP198-298). You cannot consider yourself a Thai resto if you don't have pad thai, as it is one of the national and popular dishes of Thailand. What lies underneath the blanket of egg?.. Rice noodles and chicken then flavored with tamarind, fish sauce, dried shrimp, garlic, shallots, red chili pepper and served with lime sprouts and chopped roasted peanuts. Burp!
CHICKEN LEG BARBECUE (PhP 290). Tender and juicy, this boneless barbecue had hints of curry all over giving this chicken a slightly different (and delicious) flavor from what we are accustomed to.
SEAFOOD in CURRY SAUCE (PhP 288). A melange of shrimps, squid and other seafood plus some vegetables in signature curry sauce. A perfect order for those non-red meat eaters and those who just love curry in almost everything.
FRIED BANANA ala Mode (PhP 128). Ice cream is always a palate pleaser, but add fried bananas with syrup, it comes out with more character.
THAI HALO-HALO (PhP138). You gotta love this shaved "coconut milk" ice with caramel instead of the usual "plain ice". For toppings, there are sweetened langka and beans, toddy palm fruit (almost similar to kaong) and some colorful water chestnuts.
STICKY RICE with MANGO (PhP138). Traditional Thai dessert consisting of glutinous rice, ripe mango and coconut cream - served separately but eaten together. A perfect ending to any Thai food trip.
But wait there's more! Enjoy refreshing drinks like Thai Iced Tea (PhP85) (also served hot), Thai Coffee (iced or hot), Pandan juice and tea, Roselle (known as labog in Iloilo) and a whole lot more.
