Simple Chop Suey

One of the simplest vegetable dishes to cook is CHOP SUEY. It could be a side dish or a full meal depending on how you want it to be.




As the recipe varies from almost every household and restaurant, they say that there could be a thousand and one ways of making chop suey!


A mix and match dish,  made with our own choice of vegetables, one can have it vegetarian or laden with all the meats or just a right combination of both. It's an endless tweak of a basic recipe until you find the one that suits your taste and your budget.

So let's make  Chop Suey.



Ingredients

  • 1 cup Broccoli florets
  • 1 cup Cauliflower floretw
  • 1 cup Carrots, sliced
  • 2 cups Cabbage, cut 1/2 inch
  • 1 cup Sayote strips
  • 5 pieces Shrimps
  • 1 cup Chicken, cubed or strips
  • 1 small Onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves Garlic, chopped
  • Salt and pepper (preferably white) to taste
  • Shrimp bouillon cube, optional
  • 1 tablespoon Corn starch
  • 1-2 cups Water, adjust
  • Sesame oil, optional

How to cook a simple Chopsuey dish
  1. In a pan, saute onions then garlic.
  2. Add shrimps then chicken and stir fry.
  3. Mix in carrots and sayote then add water.
  4. Simmer and season according to taste.
  5. Add cabbage, caluflower and broccoli.
  6. In a bowl, mix thoroughly cornstarch and water.
  7. Pour the slurry into the pan. Adjust thickness and amount of sauce and flavor accordingly.
  8. Remove from heat and drizzle with sesame oil if desired.

The measurements for this recipe are just guides. You can estimate the amount or just throw in what ever is available.



You can add more veggies lile young corn, baguio beans, chicharo and more. Plus you can mix and match meat like chicken, pork and seafood (fish, squid, shrimp) balls.

You can also use a variety of seasonings too - soy sauce, fish sauce, oyster sauce and more. 

 We sometimes use ready to cook soup mixes like cream of corn soup and the likes for an easy peasy recipe. Enjoy!
